Using play and creativity in life story work

The resources on this website centre play and creativity as vital tools for helping children and young people make sense of their past, explore their identity and express their hopes for the future.

But what exactly are the benefits of incorporating play and creativity into life story work?

The evidence for using play and creativity

The Creative Life Story Work site was created by Blue Cabin – a charity which helps care-experienced people build and strengthen relationships through trauma-informed creative activities.

Blue Cabin’s work is informed by research showing the benefits of creative and cultural activities for care-experienced children and young people.

These benefits can include:

Testing creative approaches to life story work

Between 2018 and 2020, Blue Cabin worked with Professor Richard Rose of Therapeutic Life Story Work International, and South Tyneside Council to pilot a new, creative approach to life story work. In 2021 a wider roll-out of the approach was funded by What Work Centre for Children’s Social Care.

Coram and Ipsos Mori evaluated the creative approach to life story work and found that:

  • It is higher quality and more collaborative than traditional life story work
  • It helps to develop and strengthen relationships between care-experienced children and young people and their carers.

Creative activities for direct work

We’ve built on everything we learnt to develop a bank of trauma-informed, creative activities you can use during life story work. And you can find them all here, on the Creative Life Story Work website.

Each one is designed to help children and young people explore a different aspect of their life.
